Mendenhall Draft Stopper

 

Icy glacial colors + classic nordic designs = a knitty way of blocking  those pesky winter drafts. From Beth Moriarty and inspired by the colors of Alaska’s Mendenhall Glacier. Includes tips for customizing door and window sizes.

The highlight of our Alaskan cruise was sailing to the Mendenhall Glacier, which “calves” huge chunks of ice, creating icebergs. On the passage to the glacier, the closer we got the more floes drifted past the ship. For someone raised in Florida, it was pure magic. The colors of the ice, inspiration for this project, were stunning.

Although few places in the United States get quite as cold as Alaska, most of us could use a little something to block drafts under doors or along windowsills. Check the Tips section for alternate sizing for both doors and windows. Though this project uses four colors, there are only two on any row, making it a much easier knit than it looks.

Finished Measurements: Approximately 42″ (107cm) long and 13″ (33cm) in diameter before filling. Length can be adjusted by adding or subtracting repeats of design.

Project Gauge: 22 stitches and 24 rounds = 4” (10cm) in stranded stockinette stitch on US 7 (4.5mm) needles after blocking

 Yarn: Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (100% superwash wool, 220 yards/200m per 100g skein); 1 skein each Blue #846 (darkest blue shade), Baby Denim #897 (medium blue shade), Alaska Sky #1914 (lightest blue shade) and Winter White #910A
